Here's a project dear to my heart. For a School project at Gobelins, we had to choose a protest song and then create our own font family inspired by the song or the thematic, and then direct a lyrics video, or at least a pilot of a few seconds.
Being myself a colored man, and feeling concerned by the recent events at that time (especially the tragic death of George Floyd and Jacob Blake), I was teaching myself about the struggle for the civil rights in the US and about the expension Black Lives Matter (BLM) movment that was reaching France. Being a fan of Rap, R'n'B and Hip-Hop music, i chose to work on the song "This Is America" by Childish Gambino.
The main idea was to use the fonts used for posters and Entertainment  during the segregation and create a font that would resonnate with today problematics, and that could fit the mood Childish Gambino sets in his song.
One of the main constraint for this project was to use an existing font family to work from and to better understand how we create a fonctional Font family. For my project I chose the VTC Martin from Vocal Type, a type inspired by the civil rights period. For the other references, it was protest pictures and signs, and old american posters.
The font family created was named the "BREATH" font family, in memory of George Floyd and the " I can't breath" BLM signs at that time. I created 3 fonts, the Breath-sans, the Breath-entertainment and the Breath-Nomore.
